My name is Megan.

I just finished grade 7 here in Canada. Last year when my sister came back from Tanzania, she recounted helping students from HOCET Secondary School who were close to her age, but who’s skill levels were much lower than she would have expected. Here in Canada, education is taken for granted, and although I am 12 and have heard about education being a problem in Africa, I never really thought about it until Jessie told me about her experiences.... Read More

HSS Class of 2010, Today: A Reflection

HOCET Secondary School’s 2010 Form IV graduates have inspired me, and are a great reminder to me of the impact HSS has on its students….. I was involved in Kujali’s graduate transition program- The Maendeleo (Development) Program- for HSS graduates last year. I specifically spent time teaching our graduates basic computer skills, including typing skills, word-processing, and media-based presentation skills. I also have spent individual... Read More

Now Calling: Join Us For Climb For Kujali 2011

They took on a mountain for our kids. This past summer, a team of eleven international climbers, led by Kujali’s Director of Development, Sarah Lowe, met in Moshi, Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in support of HOCET Secondary School (HSS).  Together, they raised over $75,000 for school construction, paving the way for HSS to become a registered boarding school in Tanzania.  It was an inspiring journey for the team — exploring a new... Read More

Strategic Planning at HSS

It has been an important month for the HSS community.  We’ve strengthened the dialogue among school stakeholders, asked the hard questions, reflected on challenges, and identified our greatest needs moving forward. Deanna Cherry, a non-profit consultant out of Los Angeles, CA, joined us in Tanzania for one month with her daughter, Haley, and facilitated strategic planning meetings with our students, our teachers, and HOCET’s Board of Directors... Read More

New ENVO Stoves at HSS! (and a very happy Head Cook)

Last year, we built a kitchen at HOCET Secondary School to replace the traditional hut that was in use before.  How about a before and after photo? Until this month, the school’s Cook, Hussein, has been preparing food with firewood, as many people do in rural Tanzania.  The open flames produce a tremendous amount of smoke and heat; it isn’t efficient, it certainly isn’t eco-friendly, and it has been really tough on Hussein and... Read More
